Why Malaysians Love Japan, Even Though They Once Ruled Us

If we look back at history, Japan’s occupation of Malaya during World War II was a challenging time for our ancestors. It was a period that tested their resilience and strength. But here’s the remarkable part—despite that history, most Malaysians today hold a lot of respect and admiration for Japan.

So, why do Malaysians have such positive feelings toward Japan? Let’s break it down in simple, Malaysian style.

1. Japan Said “Sorry” and Made Things Right

One thing about Japan—they didn’t just brush their mistakes under the carpet. Over the years, they’ve made efforts to apologize for their actions during the war. Not just with words, but also by building better relationships with Malaysia through education, business, and cultural exchanges.

As Malaysians, we’re naturally forgiving lah. If someone says sorry and shows they’ve changed, we’re willing to move forward.

2. Mahathir Told Us to "Look East"

Back in the 80s, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad introduced the Look East Policy, telling Malaysians to learn from Japan instead of always looking to the West. He admired their work ethic, discipline, and how they bounced back after the war.

For many Malaysians, this shifted the focus from the painful past to how much we could actually learn from Japan. Instead of hating them, we started looking up to them as role models.

3. Japan Changed for the Better

After World War II, Japan completely turned itself around. They stopped being aggressive and focused on becoming a peaceful, hardworking, and super innovative nation. Their cars, electronics, and even fashion became world-famous.

This “new Japan” is what Malaysians know and admire today. We think of Toyota, Sony, Uniqlo, and even Doraemon—not the army tanks and warplanes of the past.

4. We Share Similar Asian Values

Japanese culture has a lot in common with us Malaysians. They’re big on respect for elders, being polite, and working together as a community—things we also value.

When we see how disciplined and courteous the Japanese are, we can’t help but respect them. Malaysians love this kind of “baik punya” behavior.

5. They Bring Jobs and Business Here

Japanese companies have invested a lot in Malaysia, creating jobs and opportunities. From factories to educational programs, they’ve contributed to our growth as a nation.

Plus, so many Malaysians have gone to Japan to study or train under Japanese programs. These experiences build goodwill and create positive vibes between both countries.

6. We’re Crazy About Japanese Stuff

Let’s be real—Malaysians love Japanese culture. From sushi and ramen to anime and J-pop, we’re big fans. Younger Malaysians grew up watching Naruto, eating at Sushi King, and shopping at Daiso. For them, Japan is all about coolness and quality.

When you’re surrounded by so much awesome stuff from Japan, it’s hard to stay mad about something that happened 80 years ago.

7. Time Heals Wounds

Most of us weren’t even born during the Japanese occupation. Over time, the pain of that period has faded. What we see now is how much Japan has contributed to Malaysia’s progress and how they’ve become a peaceful and respectful country.

Malaysians are practical people—we focus on what’s happening now, not just what happened in the past.

8. We’re a Forgiving Nation

Malaysians are known for being relatable and easygoing. If someone or a country makes up for their mistakes, we’re more likely to move on. After all, holding grudges isn’t our style.

Sure, history between Malaysia and Japan hasn’t always been pretty. But Japan has worked hard to turn things around, and Malaysians have chosen to focus on the good stuff they bring to the table now. From their amazing culture to their investments in our country, Japan has shown us they’re more than just their past. And as Malaysians, we’re all about looking forward, not backward. So, it’s no wonder we admire Japan today.
